Inside Schönbrunn Palace: Is the After Hours Tour Worth It?

In Austria   •   Leave a Comment

Grand ballroom at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna with gilded chandeliers, frescoed ceiling and polished parquet floors under warm golden light There is something slightly surreal about walking into an imperial palace after it has closed to the public. At 5pm, while most visitors were making their way back into central Vienna, I was waiting outside the entrance to Schonbrunn Palace with around fifteen other people, ready...

Standing Still at the Danube Shoes Memorial, Budapest

Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial in Budapest, with multiple rusted iron shoes lined along the river’s edge, small flowers placed inside some pairs, and the Danube flowing past under a grey sky. I visited the Shoes on the Danube Bank on a cold, grey afternoon, the kind where the city feels slightly muted. The sky was low and colourless, the ground damp from recent rain, and the Danube moved past without ceremony. It wasn't dramatic weather, exactly....

Budapest at Night: Seeing the City After Dark 🌙

Hungarian Parliament building at night in Budapest, a very large stone building beside the Danube. It has a wide, symmetrical shape with a tall round dome in the centre, many narrow pointed towers, rows of arches, and bright yellow lights reflecting in the river below. Budapest is beautiful by day, but Budapest at night feels cinematic. Buildings glow, the Danube turns into a mirror, and familiar landmarks slow down, becoming quieter and more theatrical after dark.

Chain Bridge in Budapest during winter daylight, with stone towers and suspension cables stretching across the Danube, Buda Castle visible on the hill in the background under a pale grey sky. Budapest is one of those cities that feels grand before you even arrive. Spanning both sides of the Danube and packed with dramatic architecture, it has a weight to it, like it knows its own history and is not in a rush to show it...

St Sava Temple in Belgrade, Serbia, with its striking white stone façade and large teal-green domes topped with gold crosses. The sky is partly cloudy, and bare winter trees frame the lower edge of the cathedral. Trying to decide which Danube capital is best for your next city break? This is your lighthearted guide to choosing between Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade - four cities with one mighty river in common, but wildly different personalities.

Danube Daydreams: Vienna to Belgrade, and Everything In Between 🌊

View across the Danube in Budapest during winter daylight, with riverside walkway and pedestrians in the foreground and pastel-coloured buildings and hills of Buda lining the opposite bank under a pale sky. Four cities, one river, and four very different personalities. The Danube might tie them together on a map, but in real life, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade could not feel more distinct. These are some of the most fascinating Danube cities, and while I didn’t...

Things to do in Budapest, Hungary: Main Highlights 🇭🇺

Hungarian Parliament Building in Budapest during daylight, with white stone facade, red-tiled roofs, Gothic spires and central dome rising above green shrubs under an overcast sky. If you're short on time but big on curiosity, Budapest is the kind of place that rewards even the briefest visit. I only had 24 hours in this stunning city (rude, I know), but it made a big impression.

Is One Day in Bratislava Worth It? My First Impressions 🇸🇰

Narrow street in Bratislava Old Town with pastel historic buildings on both sides, a traditional café with festive garlands and outdoor tables on the left, wet cobbled pavement, and a few people walking under a grey winter sky. Bratislava might not be the first city on your Central Europe hit list, but it should be. Compact, quirky, and quietly beautiful, Slovakia's capital is the kind of place that surprises you in the best way.
