I visited Hallstatt on a winter day trip from Vienna and, despite the long travel time, it ended up being one of the most memorable places I saw in Austria. Once you arrive and see the village beside the lake, the journey suddenly feels much less like a hassle.

There are three main ways to reach Hallstatt from Vienna:

Train from Vienna to Hallstatt 🚆
Taking the train is one of the most scenic and relaxing ways to reach Hallstatt.
Most routes involve a train from Vienna to Attnang-Puchheim, followed by a second train to Hallstatt station.
From there, you take a short ferry across Lake Hallstatt to reach the village itself (you can see these journey segments pinned on the map below).
This final part of the journey is actually one of the most memorable moments of the trip. As the ferry approaches the shore, the entire village appears in front of you with mountains rising behind it. Watching the village slowly appear across the water feels like a pretty good introduction to Hallstatt.

Driving gives you more flexibility and slightly shorter travel time.
The journey usually takes about 3 hours, depending on traffic and weather.
The route passes through beautiful Austrian countryside, with forests, lakes, and alpine villages along the way. In winter, when I visited, the snow-covered landscapes made the drive feel like part of the experience.
Keep in mind that Hallstatt’s historic centre is car-free, so you’ll need to park in designated visitor car parks outside the village.

I visited in winter, when the mountains and rooftops were dusted with snow. The village felt calm and atmospheric, and the scenery looked almost unreal.
Summer brings warmer weather and greener landscapes, but it’s also the busiest time of year. Large numbers of day visitors arrive throughout the day.
