I’m Hazel – a travel writer and festive-walk enthusiast – and these are my favourite routes to stretch your legs, breathe in the crisp air, and feel thoroughly enchanted.

Here are five magical festive walks in Edinburgh to add to your winter plans.

George Street to the Castle 🏰

Start under the fairy lights on George Street, where you’ll find glowing trees, shopfront sparkle, pop-up bars and even an ice rink at Christmas.

From there, walk west toward Charlotte Square, then loop around to Castle Street for the postcard-perfect view up to Edinburgh Castle.

As you continue up the Mound, the lights get denser and the festive energy ramps up. End at the Castle Esplanade for sweeping views and glowing projections.

Victoria Street & the Grassmarket 🎁

Victoria Street looks like it was made for Christmas – all colourful curves and shop windows full of twinkle.

Begin at the top and zigzag your way down, pausing to peek inside the indie boutiques and fudge shops.

At the bottom, the Grassmarket opens up with views of the castle and cosy pubs strung with lights.

It’s a perfect circuit for a late-afternoon wander, and while you’re at Grassmarket you can also get a shot of The Vennel viewpoint too.

The Royal Mile by Candlelight 🕯️

The Royal Mile is festive in a more traditional way: less neon, more old-world charm.

Start at St Giles’ Cathedral, admire the wreath-clad lamp posts, and wander slowly toward Holyrood Palace.

Look out for live music, carollers, and flickering torches outside the museums.

It’s moody, magical, and particularly atmospheric just after sunset when the sky turns indigo.

Dean Village & the Water of Leith Walkway 🌊

Need a breather from the crowds? This walk is pure winter calm.

From the West End, drop into Dean Village and follow the Water of Leith as it winds past old mills, stone bridges, and riverside pathways dusted in frost.

It’s especially lovely early in the morning, when the rooftops glisten and the city feels hushed.

Bonus: you can loop up through Stockbridge and warm up with a hot chocolate at one of the local cafés.

Calton Hill for Golden Hour Glow 🌇

This one’s a climb, but oh-so-worth it.

Head up Calton Hill around golden hour (around 3-4pm in winter) for panoramic views of the city bathed in amber light. You’ll see the Forth, the castle, and Arthur’s Seat in silhouette.

Bring a flask if you’re feeling prepared, or just soak up the view and the cold air. It’s a gorgeous way to end the day.
