Nestled on the banks of the River Tay, Dunkeld is one of the prettiest villages in Perthshire, and a true gateway to the Highlands. With its mix of history, nature, and local charm, there’s no shortage of things to do in Dunkeld, whether you’re here for a quick stop or a longer stay.

Discover the scenic view of a small village with white houses by a river, reminiscent of things to do in Dunkeld, surrounded by autumn trees and hills under a clear blue sky.
Dunkeld in Autumn

I’ve visited Dunkeld a few of times now, and every season brings something new – but if you catch it in autumn, the colours are truly spectacular.

This guide will walk you through the very best spots to explore Dunkeld, plus tips on where to stay, eat, and wander. Think cathedral ruins, magical woodland walks, riverside pubs, and even a bit of whisky tasting.

1. Explore Dunkeld Cathedral ⛪

The star of the village, Dunkeld Cathedral, dates back to the 12th century and is a beautiful mix of Gothic and Norman architecture.

While part of it lies in romantic ruin, the rest is still in use as a parish church.

Originally built in the 12th century, Dunkeld Cathedral is a blend of Gothic and Norman architecture.

Set right beside the River Tay, the cathedral grounds are a lovely place to wander. Ancient gravestones dot the churchyard, and in autumn the trees turn into a painter’s palette of reds and golds.

2. Walk Through The Hermitage 🌲

Just outside Dunkeld lies The Hermitage, a woodland straight out of a fairytale. Towering Douglas firs (some of the tallest trees in Britain) line the trails.

The highlight is Ossian’s Hall, an 18th-century folly perched above the roaring Black Linn Falls. There’s also Ossian’s Cave (pictured above) which adds to the magic.

This is an easy walk, perfect for soaking up the wild beauty of Perthshire.

3. Have Lunch by the Riverside 🍴

Few things are better than enjoying a hearty meal with a view of the River Tay.

The Atholl Arms Hotel has a terrace overlooking the water, serving Scottish classics. I tucked into a roast dinner with a pint of local beer and it hit the spot.

For something more casual, head to The Taybank, famous for its riverside beer garden and live folk music nights. Either way, it’s a perfect way to refuel while admiring Telford’s stone bridge arching gracefully across the river.

4. Visit the Birnam Oak and Birnam Wood 🌳

Literary fans will know this one – Birnam Wood is name-checked in Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

A large, ancient tree near Dunkeld with a hollow trunk stands in a grassy area. In the background, there is a stone house and greenery surrounding it.
The Birnam Oak – famous historical tree linked to Shakespeare

Today, the ancient Birnam Oak still stands, gnarled and hollow but full of character. It’s thought to be more than 500 years old.

Standing beneath its branches, you can see why the Bard immortalised this place.

It’s just a short stroll from Dunkeld across the bridge to Birnam, making it an easy addition to your itinerary.

5. Try the Dunkeld and Birnam Walk 🚶

If you’re looking for a gentle stroll, the Dunkeld and Birnam Walk is a lovely circular route linking the two villages.

It winds through woodland, riverside paths, and quiet streets lined with Georgian and Victorian houses.

Along the way, you’ll pass local galleries, cafes, and even spot the Atholl Memorial Fountain in Dunkeld’s square. It’s a great way to get a feel for the area’s heritage and natural beauty all in one go.

6. Visit the Beatrix Potter Exhibition 🐰

Did you know Beatrix Potter spent childhood holidays in Birnam?

The Birnam Arts Centre has a delightful exhibition dedicated to Beatrix Potter, complete with Peter Rabbit-themed displays for little ones.

It’s a hit with families, offering interactive activities, a Beatrix Potter Garden, and a chance to learn how the Perthshire landscape inspired some of her most beloved tales.

Note: the actual Beatrix Potter house is in the Lake District (England).

7. Discover the Dunkeld House Tree Trail 🌿

For something a little different, the Dunkeld House Tree Trail takes you through the estate of Dunkeld House, once the seat of the Dukes of Atholl.

Here you’ll find rare and exotic trees planted in the 18th century, alongside towering conifers.

It’s a peaceful walk with information boards dotted along the route, making it both relaxing and educational. Pick up a leaflet map before you set off to make the most of it. Click here to see a map and leaflet.

8. Enjoy the River Tay 🌊

The River Tay is Scotland’s longest river, and in Dunkeld it’s at its most picturesque. You can stroll along the banks, try your hand at salmon fishing, or even head out kayaking.

For something more laid-back, just walk across Dunkeld Bridge, designed by Thomas Telford in 1809. The seven arches make a striking photo backdrop, and birdwatchers will love spotting herons, ducks, and maybe even ospreys nearby.

I enjoyed taking a riverside walk and soaking in the scenic views or, if you’re more adventurous, you could try your hand at salmon fishing, one of the area’s most popular pastimes.

9. Wander Dunkeld’s Historic Town Centre 🏘️

Dunkeld itself is postcard-perfect. The narrow streets are lined with colourful Georgian houses, cosy cafes, and local shops.

Don’t miss the Ell Shop, an 18th-century weaver’s house now restored as a heritage site.

In the main square, you’ll find the Atholl Memorial Fountain, built in 1866, and several lovely spots for coffee and cake. It’s a small town centre, but one you’ll want to linger in.

10. Visit Loch of the Lowes 🦉

Just a few minutes outside Dunkeld lies the Loch of the Lowes nature reserve, managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. This is the place to spot red squirrels, otters, and most famously, ospreys.

There’s a visitor centre with telescopes and interactive displays, making it perfect for families or wildlife lovers. Spring and summer are especially exciting when the ospreys return to nest.

11. Take a Scenic Drive into the Highlands 🚗

Dunkeld makes a fantastic base for exploring the wider Perthshire and Highland landscapes. From here, you can head north towards Pitlochry, Aberfeldy, or even Loch Tay.

Every season offers something new: fiery autumn colours, snowy winter peaks, or lush green glens in summer. If you’re not up for hiking, a scenic drive is just as rewarding.

12. Go Whisky Tasting 🥃

No trip to this part of Scotland would be complete without a dram.

Edradour Whisky Distillery

Just a short drive away, you’ll find the Edradour Distillery near Pitlochry and the Aberfeldy Distillery further east.

Both offer tours and tastings where you’ll learn about the whisky-making process (and of course, sample a few). It’s the perfect way to end a Highland adventure.
