Porto Moniz is where Madeira’s wild side comes out to play. Perched on the island’s northwest edge, this tiny town is famous for its lava rock pools so clear you’ll think they’ve been filtered for Instagram, mountains that drop straight into the ocean, and glorious sunsets to boot. If you’re looking for unforgettable things to do in Porto Moniz, you’ll find plenty tucked into this rugged corner of the island.

I’m Hazel, a travel blogger who believes life’s too short for boring itineraries. I’ve explored Madeira in all seasons, and I keep coming back to Porto Moniz for its untamed beauty, welcoming locals, and that “edge of the world” feeling you just don’t get anywhere else.

Porto Moniz is also a place to slow down. You might spend a morning swimming in natural pools, an afternoon sipping wine on a cliffside terrace, and an evening watching the sky turn gold from a lighthouse. And you’ll be sharing it with seabirds and a scattering of locals, not busloads of tourists.

When I recommend something here, it’s because I’ve swum it, hiked it, or eaten it (and probably done all three in the same day).

1. Swim in the Famous Natural Pools 🏊‍♀️

If Porto Moniz had a postcard cover star, this would be it. These lava-formed swimming pools are like nature’s infinity pools, filled with clear seawater and backed by Atlantic waves crashing dramatically just beyond.

You’ve got two choices: Piscinas Naturais do Porto Moniz – the polished “lido” version with smooth edges, lifeguards, changing rooms, and a small entrance fee. Perfect for families and poolside loungers.

Piscinas Naturais do Aquário – wilder, more rugged, and completely free. No lifeguards, but 100% photogenic. Water shoes recommended unless you enjoy a surprise foot massage from volcanic rock. Bring a snorkel (fish love hanging out here too).

2. Get Curious at the Living Science Centre 🔬

In the middle of town you’ll find this small but fun interactive museum all about Madeira’s volcanic roots, unique plants, and marine life. It’s a good rainy-day option (or just a quick geek-out session before lunch).

3. Spot Ilhéu Mole and Its Lighthouse 🏝️

Just offshore sits this rocky little islet crowned with a tiny white lighthouse. You can’t visit it, but it makes the seafront views extra special – especially at sunset when the light catches the waves.

4. Walk a Levada Trail 🌿

Madeira’s famous levada walks (historic irrigation channels with walking paths) are everywhere here.

Some easy local favourites:

🌿 Levada Nova – gentle and scenic.
🌿Levada do Moinho – short, with coastal glimpses and an old watermill.
🌿 Levada da Ribeira da Janela – lush, a bit more challenging, with waterfalls.

Bring layers – it can go from sunshine to mist faster than you can say poncha.

5. Sip Your Way Around Local Vineyards 🍷

Nearby Ribeira da Janela and Seixal have gorgeous hillside vineyards where you can stroll the vines, learn about Madeira’s winemaking history, and – most importantly – taste the goods. Don’t miss Vinhas do Tico in Porto Moniz for pure charm.

6. Step Back in Time at the Fort of São João Baptista 🏰

Once a pirate-defense fort, now home to the Madeira Aquarium. The views from the ramparts alone are worth the visit.

7. Soak Up the View at Miradouro da Santinha 🌄

For that picture-perfect sweep of Porto Moniz, ocean, and mountains, head to this viewpoint above town. There’s even a cute little chapel next door.

8. Wander Seixal’s Black Sand Beach 🏖️

Seixal, just down the road, is jaw-droppingly pretty: volcanic black sand, green mountains, and natural rock pools tucked into the shore. Bring your camera – this is Instagram gold.

I really enjoyed my time in Seixal, and planned to base myself there on my next visit.

9. Go Whale & Dolphin Watching 🐬🐳

The waters here are deep – perfect for spotting marine life. Tours run from the north coast, with a good chance of seeing dolphins, sperm whales, and even orcas if you’re lucky.

10. Catch the Sunset at Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse 🌅

Just 25 minutes away, this cliff-top lighthouse is where the sun says goodnight to Madeira. Wide-open views, ocean as far as you can see – bring a jacket and a drink for golden hour.

11. Feast on Madeiran Flavours 🍴

Seafood lovers, rejoice. This is scabbardfish, limpets, and garlic bread (bolo do caco) country.

Top restaurant picks include:

🍴Aqua Natura – dining right over the waves.
🍴Restaurante Orca – hearty portions and local vibes.
🍴Salgueiros – cosy and traditional.

12. Pop into the Porto Moniz Aquarium 🐠

Small but nicely done, with 12 tanks showing off Madeira’s native marine species. Great combo stop if you’re already visiting the fort.

13. Ride the Achadas da Cruz Cable Car 🚡

Not for the faint of heart, this cable car plunges dramatically down to the coast. But the views? Ridiculous (in the best way).

Locals actually use this cable car to transport produce and supplies, which gives the whole thing a down-to-earth twist. It’s not just for tourists.

14. Picnic at Ribeira da Janela 🧺

A lush valley with waterfalls, streams, and shady spots perfect for a laid-back lunch in nature. Bonus: hardly any crowds.

15. Step Inside the Igreja Matriz ⛪

A simple, whitewashed church with a calm, timeless atmosphere. A nice quiet moment before heading back to the coast.

FAQs About Visiting Porto Moniz 💡

If you’re planning a trip to Madeira’s rugged north coast, these frequently asked questions about Porto Moniz will help you make the most of your visit, from practical travel tips to what you can expect when you get there.

Q: Where is Porto Moniz located in Madeira?

A: Porto Moniz is situated on the far northwestern tip of Madeira Island, about 1.5 hours’ drive from Funchal. The drive is famously scenic, with winding coastal roads, dramatic sea cliffs, and panoramic viewpoints along the way.

Q: Is Porto Moniz worth visiting?

A: Yes, Porto Moniz is absolutely worth visiting. It’s home to the island’s most famous natural swimming pools, surrounded by volcanic rock and filled with crystal-clear seawater. Beyond the pools, the area offers hiking trails, dramatic coastal scenery, great local food, and a laid-back village vibe that’s perfect for slowing down.

Q: Can you swim in the natural pools year-round?

A: You can swim in the Porto Moniz natural pools at any time of year, but the water is warmest in summer. In spring, autumn, and winter, the Atlantic can feel brisk, so it’s best to swim on calmer mornings and check conditions before entering, especially if waves are strong.

Q: What’s the difference between the two swimming areas in Porto Moniz?

A: The Piscinas Naturais do Porto Moniz (main lido) is a well-maintained facility with lifeguards, changing rooms, and a small entrance fee, making it ideal for families and those wanting a more comfortable swim. The Piscinas Naturais do Aquário are free to access and more rugged, with dramatic rock formations and no facilities, so water shoes are a smart idea.

Q: Do I need a car to visit Porto Moniz?

A: While it’s possible to reach Porto Moniz by public bus or guided tour, Hiring a car is the best way to explore. Having your own vehicle gives you the flexibility to stop at viewpoints, nearby villages, and vineyards along the way, and it’s much easier to explore Madeira’s less touristy northwest coast.

The lido-style natural pools have lifeguards and shallow areas for children, and the town itself has safe, walkable streets, plenty of restaurants, and calm spots like Ribeira da Janela for picnics.
