I’m Hazel, a British travel blogger with a soft spot for sunshine, seafood, and places with a bit of soul. I’ve explored Funchal from its sun-drenched marina to the misty hills of Monte – and let me tell you, this city has serious charm.
If you’re wondering what to do while you’re here, you’re in the right spot – this guide covers the absolute best of things to do in Funchal. You’ll also find an interactive map, hand-picked tours, and hotel tips to help plan your stay.
1. Ride the Cable Car to Monte 🚡
Start with a lift – literally. Soar above the rooftops from downtown Funchal to the hillside village of Monte. The views over the bay are chef’s kiss. Bring your camera.

2. Scream-Laugh on the Monte Toboggan Ride 🛷
Once you’ve reached Monte, the fun way back down is in a wicker sled on wheels, steered by two white-clad men at breakneck (but safe) speed. Bonkers? Yes. But also iconic.

3. Roam the Monte Palace Tropical Garden 🌿
Just steps from the cable car drop-off, this dreamy garden is full of koi ponds, exotic plants, and moody sculptures. Half-Asian zen garden, half botanical paradise, it’s a magical way to spend an afternoon.

4. Wander the Painted Doors in Old Town 🎨
Zona Velha’s Santa Maria Street is where Funchal’s arty side shines. Dozens of doors have been turned into vibrant murals, every step is a new surprise. It’s a great spot for a photo stroll and a snack. There is a cool poncha bar here too (see FAQs below).

5. Snack Your Way Around Mercado dos Lavradores 🍌
Funchal’s glorious farmers’ market is a feast for the senses. Tropical fruits, flowers, fresh fish, and local delicacies. Try the ‘banana passionfruit’ (trust me). You can get properly involved with the fish auction too.

6. Visit the Funchal Cathedral ⛪
Built in the 15th century, this understated Gothic cathedral hides a stunning carved cedar ceiling. It’s peaceful and beautifully preserved, worth a peek inside.

7. Sip a Glass (or Two) of Poncha 🍹
Madeira’s most beloved drink is strong, citrusy, and dangerously easy to love. Best enjoyed in a no-frills Poncha bar, surrounded by chatty locals and island vibes. Some bars also let you try your hand at mixing the poncha too (it’s actually harder than it looks).

8. Chill at Santa Catarina Park 🌳
Need a moment of peace? This lush park is a quiet gem with fountains, flowers, and panoramic views over Funchal harbour. Perfect for a picnic or a breather between sightseeing.

9. Take a Dip at the Lido Complex 🏊♂️
If you’re craving a swim but the Atlantic looks too chilly, the Lido’s saltwater pools and sunny terraces are the answer. Relax, swim, repeat.

10. Get a Culture Fix at Teatro Baltazar Dias 🎭
Funchal’s gorgeous 19th-century theatre still hosts concerts, plays, and cultural events. You can see what’s on here, or just pop inside for a peek at the ornate interior.
11. Explore São Tiago Fort & Seaside Views 🏰
This canary-yellow 17th-century fort once defended the coast from pirates. Now it offers sweeping sea views and houses rotating art exhibits. A lovely detour while wandering the Old Town.

12. Discover Madeira’s Story at the Story Centre 📖
Want to understand Madeira beyond the beaches? This interactive museum walks you through volcanic beginnings, explorers, pirates, and more (in a fun, bite-sized format). There is a gift shop where you can pick up some cool Madeira souvenirs.
13. Admire Art & Antiques at Frederico de Freitas Museum 🖼️
Quirky, elegant, and oddly fascinating. This restored mansion is full of Madeiran furniture, tiles, and decorative treasures. For art and history lovers alike.
14. Catch Sunset from Pico dos Barcelos 🌅
A quick drive or taxi from central Funchal brings you to one of the best sunset spots on the island. Bring snacks, wine, and your wow-face.

15. Go Dolphin Spotting (Right From Funchal) 🐬
Yes, you can spot dolphins (and even whales) right from Funchal’s marina. Hop on a catamaran tour for a scenic cruise out into the Atlantic. I’ve linked my top pick below (number 6 in the tours list) – I’ve done it myself and it was absolutely unforgettable.
