Cyprus is full of places that surprise you – one minute you’re sipping coffee in a quiet mountain square, the next you’re wandering through ancient ruins by the sea. The towns in Cyprus range from lively coastal hubs to sleepy hilltop villages, each with its own personality (and usually a good taverna or two).

I’m Hazel, a British travel blogger with a thing for archaeological sites, flaky pastries, and a breezy sea view. After exploring most corners of the island, I’ve rounded up my favourite towns in Cyprus for you to explore – a mix of popular spots and a few hidden gems, including some in the north.

Paphos 🏛️

Sun, sea, and ancient ruins galore, Paphos has a bit of everything.

It’s set on the southwest coast and is known for its archaeological gems like the Tombs of the Kings and Kato Paphos Archaeological Park, plus pretty beaches and a lovely harbour.

Venture inland for laid-back wine villages or stop by Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery where you can taste wine made by monks.

The nearby Akamas Peninsula is perfect if you’re into wild coastlines and turtle-spotting at Lara Beach.

If you’re planning a monastery visit, I’ve also rounded up the best hotels near Cyprus monasteries which might come in handy.

Limassol 🌊

On the southern coast, Limassol (Lemesos) blends beachy vibes with wine country charm. It’s home to ancient sites like Amathous and Kourion, set on dramatic cliffs with sea views.

The Molos promenade is ideal for an afternoon wander, and wine lovers may want to head inland to the Krassochoria villages.

You’ll also find Kolossi Castle and plenty of Commandaria (one of the oldest wines in existence) to sample.

This is one of the more buzzing towns in Cyprus if you’re after culture, coastlines, and nightlife all in one spot.

Nicosia 🕌

The last divided capital in the world, Nicosia (Lefkosia) is full of contrasts.

You’ll need your passport to cross the Green Line between the Greek and Turkish sides.

You can explore the Cyprus Museum, Venetian Walls, or browse the boutiques along Ledra Street.

The surrounding countryside is dotted with traditional villages like Fikardou, full of authentic Cypriot charm.

Larnaca 🏝️

Larnaca blends relaxed coastal life with layers of history.

Larnaca, Cyrpus

The palm-lined Phinikoudes Promenade is perfect for a sunset stroll, while landmarks like the Church of Saint Lazarus and Kamares Aqueduct offer something older to admire.

Nearby Lefkara is known for its lacework and folklore – even da Vinci is said to have visited. And if you’re around from November to March, look out for flamingos at the Larnaca Salt Lakes.

Among the coastal towns in Cyprus, Larnaca stands out for its mix of beach time and ancient culture.

Famagusta & Varosha 🏚️

Once a major port and tourism hub, Famagusta is now partly within Northern Cyprus. You can stroll the old walled city, pop by Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, or visit the ghost town of Varosha, a poignant relic of the 1974 conflict.

Nearby villages like Sotira and Deryneia add to the area’s character, with medieval churches and folk museums. You’ll need your passport to cross into the north.

👉See more in 1 Day Famagusta & Varosha Itinerary or combine with 5 Day Cyprus Coast Road Trip.

Troodos Villages ⛰️

A cluster of mountain hideaways rather than one town – but they’re too lovely not to mention. Think cobbled lanes, shady pine forests, and old stone houses.

Omodos village

Villages like Omodos, Platres, and Kakopetria are known for local wines, waterfall hikes, and friendly tavernas. This is also where some of the best food in Cyprus is produced.

Don’t miss Kykkos Monastery (one of many important monasteries in Cyprus) or the scenic Caledonia Falls.

👉 Fancy a taste? Here’s a Troodos Day Trip Itinerary to get you started.

Kyrenia (Girne) ⚓

On the north coast, Kyrenia offers a charming harbour, an imposing castle, and historic architecture. The nearby Bellapais Abbey is a peaceful gem with literary links, and you’ll find Crusader castles tucked into the hills.

To the west, the landscape opens into orchards and Roman ruins like Soli and the Persian palace of Vouni.

👉 Consider adding Kyrenia to your 5 Day Cyprus Coast Road Trip if you’re crossing north (also see my advice on border crossing points).

Ayia Napa & Cape Greco 🌅

Yes, it’s famous for nightlife – but there’s more to Ayia Napa than beach bars.

Nissi Beach

There’s Nissi Beach with its sandbar and turquoise waters, and Cape Greco National Park offers sea caves, hiking trails, and the iconic Love Bridge.

Snorkel, hike, or just soak in the views.
